Independent publishing has changed

28 02 2010

I’ve been a writer and publisher since the early 1990′s and over the years a lot has changed. Independent publishing has grown up and come into its own. I have to think that the Internet has helped spread the word and made it possible for legitimate independent publishers to reach the right clients. In addition to that, the Internet has served to educate and raise the sophistication level of the writers and authors themselves. (I’m talking about the predatory, pseudo-publishers that have been taking advantage of naive writers for decades.) It’s not so easy for them anymore. Today’s writer’s are savvy and when they need to check a company out, they know where to find that information. Print on Demand technology has revolutionized the publishing industry as a whole, and there is a fast-growing, vital and exciting community of talented people finding new and viable ways to see their books published and made available literally worldwide. At the same time, we are seeing more and more big publishing houses flounder and cut corners (that’s another article altogether).

One of the best ways for a writer/author to keep a solid footing, is to become involved in local and national conferences and networking organizations. Example: this weekend, I participated in the Bloomington Writer’s Conference and Book Fair in Minneapolis. It was a great experience, though I wish I could have attended more workshops. I did however, have the opportunity to give a 10-minute, televised reading from my book, Thinking Skinny. (I’m not sure when or where it will be aired, but if I can get the clip, I will post it here at the blogsite.) Overall, I learned a lot and loved the one-on-one interaction with the public, talking about my book, and especially getting to know dozens of local writers and publishers.

Two organizations I can suggest: Midwest Independent Publisher’s Association (MIPA) and the Independent Publisher (IPPY) Book Awards.

Nadia Giordana interviews extraordinary women

1 12 2009

Things are moving rapidly.  As soon as I began interviewing women for my Blog Talk Radio show, Thinking Skinny with Nadia Giordana (see the page for the line-up), it became obvious that I needed a broader platform–or better, an additional one.

In my travels, I come into contact with extraordinay women from all walks of life. Often, their accomplishments have nothing to do with weight-loss. Nevertheless, they fascinate me and I’ve decided to help share their stories. That’s how my second Blog Talk Radio show was born.  Interviews with Extraordianry Women is coming together as I write this. “Tune-in” here for late-breaking developments as they become public. Printed transcriptions from some of these interviews will appear here at NadiaGiordana.com, and selected interview transcriptions related to weight loss will be posted at www.thinkingskinny.com.

All you need do to hear any Blog Talk Radio program on demand, is to go to the main Blog Talk Radio website and register as a listener–it’s free!

RE: FTC book blogger regulations

31 10 2009

Much of the information I refer to in this entry (link follows)  is news to me and I will study it and comply where applicable going forward.  I’m not a professional book reviewer, nor am I a professional blogger, but since I do post my personal opinions and sometimes mini-reviews about some selected products and books that I’ve had experience with, I plan to be proactive, learn what this is about and apply any necessary good practices to my blog and its entries. That said, the following link at J. Kaye’s Book Blog presents the details.

43 years later

4 10 2009

Nadia42YrsApart copyIt’s strange, looking at these two photos, but now in 2009, 43 years after the first one was taken (1966), I’m happy to be looking a lot less “old and tired” than I was during the years leading up to 2007. (I’ve posted a number of those “fat” pictures on this blog and also at Thinking Skinny.com.) So this comparison isn’t for friends and family who have known me all my life (for them, the weight loss was a welcome return to normalcy). I posted this for the people who have only known me during the last 15 years. From some of them have come comments (not unkind, mind you) like, “you look like a completely different person,” or “you don’t look like yourself anymore.” From their point of reference, they are right.  From my point of view, I’ve shaken off negative midlife thought patterns that made me overweight and old before I had to be, and I’ve happily resumed a more natural, easy to maintain, and healthy manner of living.

I know I’m not alone. Getting derailed by the stresses of life (including taking care of everyone else while neglecting self) happens to the majority of women in America at some point in their lives and to a lesser degree, the men. The methods I used in Thinking Skinny helped get me back on track.

Meeting a Contributor to MCM and a Follower of TSK

12 09 2009

SueMNadia2090709web

Sue Midlock of Joliet, Illinois is a regular contributor to Mississippi Crow magazine. She’s a writer and a talented artist.  Joliet is only about 10 minutes from where I was visiting in Lockport, Illinois so when I planned my trip, I set aside some time on the 7th for us to get together.

Sue’s work is displayed at Gallery 1700 & Ceramics in Cresthill, IL and her notecards are available at the Lockport Street Gallery in Plainfield: http://www.lockportstreetgallery.com/Art.htm. Her artwork is also online at http://sue-midlock.fineartamerica.com/.

Sue is also journaling her way through Thinking Skinny and she’s looking great! I loved meeting her and talking over coffee. She rendered me speechless when she presented me with a matted copy of one of her pieces “Girl With Crow.” I plan to feature in Issue 9 of MCM. It’s my favorite, and to be able to own a copy and display it in my home is very special. If you want your own copy, CLICK HERE. Sue also blogged about our meeting: http://skinnysusan.livejournal.com/4854.html.

Accolades for Thinking Skinny

17 08 2009

Foreword to Thinking Skinny by nationally known speaker and registered dietician, Laurie Beebe:

“Anyone who has ever tried losing weight knows how difficult and frustrating it can be.  Anyone who has successfully lost weight and kept if off knows what it really takes.  In Thinking Skinny, Nadia takes us through her personal journey and shows us what worked for her.

This is not another diet book—it is a perspective on weight loss from a person who has accomplished what she set out to do, and more!  Within these pages you will find the keys to long term weight loss.  Nadia goes beyond healthy eating and physical activity to the deeper aspects that work to achieve success in any area of life—goal setting, self-monitoring, and most of all, faith and belief in one’s self.

She addresses these important components that are missing from all the typical “quick weight loss” diet plans, as she tells her story of struggle and triumph.  The reactions of friends and relatives; the discovery of a new, thinner person within: these are all parts of the episode we become privy to that are seldom shared.

In this book you will find accurate nutritional facts, tips to become more active, delicious recipes, and the personal story of a woman who lost weight by “thinking skinny.”  Additionally you will discover inspiration to follow the path that worked for Nadia, or perhaps choose among her strategies to design your own blueprint for weight loss success.”

 Laurie Beebe, MS, RD, LD

Laurie is a practicing diet coach, a registered dietitian certified in adult weight management, a former university nutrition professor, a mentor, and a nationally known speaker on the topic of weight loss. Please visit her website: www.mycoachlaurie.com.

“What Ever Happened To…” Happened To Me

13 08 2009

I never thought I would ever be the subject of a “Whatever Happened To…” kind of story, but that’s what happened. Read on:

Nadia Wilkins, 1966 MHS graduate, now a published author
By Dawn Schimpp Timbs World reporter

gradnadia
MHS grad Pictured above is the senior photo of Nadia (Wilkins) Giordana, 1966 graduate of Motley High School.

Reporter’s note: This is the first in a series entitled, “What ever happened to…?” a periodic column which will highlight stories from graduates in the Motley and Pillager areas.

When she was writing poetry and essays for her high school English teacher, Mrs. Aune, little did Motley native Nadia (Wilkins) Giordana know she’d use what she learned to write a book someday.

The 1966 graduate of Motley High School, now a resident of the Dayton area, recently finished writing “Thinking Skinny,” a book which shares her personal story of how she lost 88 pounds in 14 months without stomach surgery, pills or fad dieting.

According to Nadia… CLICK HERE to read the full story (this link may not work unless you are a subscriber. you may be brought to a sign-up page. If so, the complete text of this story will be available online in 4 weeks and this link will be updated at that time so the full story is visible.)

Author Diane Keyes Has Book Signing

22 07 2009

NadiaDiane071809thissoldhouseWeb copy

Diane Keyes has been making appearances recently to promote her new book, This Sold House, Staging Your Home To Sell In Today’s Market. If you were watching KARE-11 TV Saturday morning at 8:15 on the 18th, you would have seen her talking about it. The latest book signing was at Borders Books at Rosedale Shopping Center. I was there to wish Diane well and get my copy. While there, I ordered a copy of Diane’s children’s book, Spirit of the Snow People for my granddaughter, Maggie. Diane is a local author and you can visit her website at www.thissoldhouse.biz. I could see this as a TV program, couldn’t you?

Thơ – Còn Mãi Theo Nhau

Buổi sáng chân theo nhau
Sương rơi mù đỉnh đầu
Cây lá đan tay nhau
Giữ tình ta dài lâu

Buổi sáng chân theo mau
Vàng nắng trải bên cầu
Sóng đùa dòng nước cuốn
Bọt tràn vỗ về nhau

Buổi sáng ta yêu nhau
Hạnh phúc vẫn tươi màu
Nắng còn giăng cuối phố
Nhịp chân mãi theo nhau …
