Debbie Johnson: new film with Bob Proctor

23 04 2011

Debbie Johnson, is the best-selling author of THINK YOURSELF THIN (and five other books). She is a respected success trainer and has appeared on national network television shows such as The Carol and Marilyn Show and The Other Side. Debbie wrote THINK YOURSELF THIN after losing 40 pounds without special diets or exercise regimens. She has kept the weight off for over 25 years, strictly using “thinking thin” techniques.

Debbie developed a special technique all her own that she terms “focused imagination.” Her background in education, psychology, sales and spiritual studies gave her the raw materials she needed to come to the realization that fat is only as firm as the imagination believes it to be! Her key point is that the imagination controls the subconscious and the subconscious controls all major glands and functions. Thus, we can control weight via the imagination. MORE…

Meeting Ali Vincent–an extraordinary woman

13 12 2009

Ali Vincent holds Nadia's book, Thinking Skinny (click to enlarge image).

Ali Vincent, season 5 winner of the Biggest Loser TV program and my “secret buddy” throughout my own weight loss success story, was at the Mall of America today to talk about her new book, Believe it, Be it. I was delighted to talk with her and get a signed copy of her book. I was also pleased to be able to present her with a copy of my book, Thinking Skinny (Ali was surprised and pleased to learn that she played a role in keeping me on track with my weight program in 2007-8 and that I wrote about her in Thinking Skinnny.)

While I was there, I was taken aside by the Prevention magazine film crew to talk briefly on camera about how I tracked along with Ali while watching the program, the weight I lost, and also how I came to write Thinking Skinny.

43 years later

4 10 2009

Nadia42YrsApart copyIt’s strange, looking at these two photos, but now in 2009, 43 years after the first one was taken (1966), I’m happy to be looking a lot less “old and tired” than I was during the years leading up to 2007. (I’ve posted a number of those “fat” pictures on this blog and also at Thinking Skinny.com.) So this comparison isn’t for friends and family who have known me all my life (for them, the weight loss was a welcome return to normalcy). I posted this for the people who have only known me during the last 15 years. From some of them have come comments (not unkind, mind you) like, “you look like a completely different person,” or “you don’t look like yourself anymore.” From their point of reference, they are right.  From my point of view, I’ve shaken off negative midlife thought patterns that made me overweight and old before I had to be, and I’ve happily resumed a more natural, easy to maintain, and healthy manner of living.

I know I’m not alone. Getting derailed by the stresses of life (including taking care of everyone else while neglecting self) happens to the majority of women in America at some point in their lives and to a lesser degree, the men. The methods I used in Thinking Skinny helped get me back on track.

Harvard Validates My Point

1 09 2009

A few months ago I published an excerpt from my book, Thinking Skinny and made it widely available. The article drew questions and even some criticism from naysayers and doubters. My article is titled “The 2,000 Calorie Per Day Misconception: How it Messes Up Your Diet, and How To Calculate What Your True Calorie Intake Should Be.” You can follow the link to read it in its entirety.

Today I read the following from Harvard Health Publications (Harvard Medical School):

“…Weight management. Prevention is the best policy. Many of us could avoid weight gain in the first place by shaving 50–100 calories from our diets. The guidelines note that although the 2,000-calorie-a-day diet remains the reference diet, it’s not the recommended one. Many Americans should be eating far fewer calories than that...”  Click Here to read the complete article. It is excellent and illustrates my point perfectly.

So NOW will you belive me? This is essential information if you want your diet to succeed. If you are serious about losing weight, go back and read my article and the more recent, Harvard Publications piece.

“What Ever Happened To…” Happened To Me

13 08 2009

I never thought I would ever be the subject of a “Whatever Happened To…” kind of story, but that’s what happened. Read on:

Nadia Wilkins, 1966 MHS graduate, now a published author
By Dawn Schimpp Timbs World reporter

MHS grad Pictured above is the senior photo of Nadia (Wilkins) Giordana, 1966 graduate of Motley High School.

Reporter’s note: This is the first in a series entitled, “What ever happened to…?” a periodic column which will highlight stories from graduates in the Motley and Pillager areas.

When she was writing poetry and essays for her high school English teacher, Mrs. Aune, little did Motley native Nadia (Wilkins) Giordana know she’d use what she learned to write a book someday.

The 1966 graduate of Motley High School, now a resident of the Dayton area, recently finished writing “Thinking Skinny,” a book which shares her personal story of how she lost 88 pounds in 14 months without stomach surgery, pills or fad dieting.

According to Nadia… CLICK HERE to read the full story (this link may not work unless you are a subscriber. you may be brought to a sign-up page. If so, the complete text of this story will be available online in 4 weeks and this link will be updated at that time so the full story is visible.)

Why the Law of Attraction Falls Short For So Many People and Why I Talk About That in THINKING SKINNY

6 07 2009

The Law of Attraction has been making headlines in popular culture recently and it has captured the imaginations of hundreds of thousands of people. You may even have heard some people claim how well it works and others say that for them, it didn’t work very well. A number of reports now say that using the Law of Attraction produces inconsistent results. (I’ve heard the same thing from women I’ve met recently, especially when we talked about weight loss. They tried it and it didn’t work very well. Most said they lost some weight, but nothing significant–or permanent). MORE…

“I’m Not Feeling Sorry For You,” came the cutting words…

14 06 2009

“I’m not feeling sorry for you.” That’s what the photographer said to me.

I had gone to have a professional photo taken for THINKING SKINNY, among other things. When I arrived, I was asked what I expected to get out of my session, so I told them about my weight loss, my book and that I wanted an author photo and also a full body “after” photo showing what I look like today.

During the shoot, the photographer, a woman who had expressed interest in losing weight when she first spoke to me, suggested I adjust my clothing which didn’t seem to fit quite right. I tried, then made the comment, “I’m still replacing my wardrobe with new pieces.” That’s when she said to me, “I’m not feeling sorry for you.” Her comment didn’t make me feel flattered, but unwelcome and resented.

That same day, the other woman on duty also expressed interest in how I had lost weight. Before I could answer, she added, “Don’t tell me I have to eat right!” I said “Well, that is one of the things you would need to do. In addition to that, my book covers how to adjust your mindset and use prayer and meditation to help keep you on track and increase your results.” Then when she saw Thinking Skinny on my business card, she said, “So if I think about being skinny, I will be skinny? The more I think it, the skinnier I will get?” she asked incredulously. It sounded like a challenge.

I wasn’t prepared for their reactions. I simply wasn’t expecting them. But I can see my old self in their comments, so I don’t blame them, or harbor any resentment. I’ve been there.

I’m in a much better place these days, and as a result, the world as a whole looks better to me. I’ve opened myself up to new ideas, new people and new experiences. Did this come about because I lost weight? No, it didn’t. It happened because my thinking, my future, and my new self, were all reset the very first day I “made up my mind” to give it up to God and let him shape my life.

A String Of Pearls…

22 04 2009
Nadia Giordana, April 2009

Nadia Giordana, April 2009

I’ve had a princess-length string of pearls for more than 25 years, and I wore them a lot until a weight gain made them uncomfortable. They were a gift from my daughter and I treasure them.  Recently, after losing the weight, I pulled them out of their box looking for something appropriate to wear for a photo shoot and to my delight, they fit perfectly.

“…Too Bad Nadia Couldn’t Be Here.”

10 04 2009
Nadia, Lu, Chuck April 9, 2009

Nadia, Lu, Chuck April 9, 2009

My husband and I have been visiting my mother-in-law at a nursing home for nearly four years now, and the nurses there are familiar with who we are, but we don’t necessarily see the same gals each time we come. Well, time passed, and yesterday at Mom’s 99th birthday celebration in the TV room (more photos below), I heard one nurse say, “It’s too bad Nadia couldn’t be here”. I turned to her and said, “I’m standing right next to you.” She looked at me in wide-eyed disbelief until she regained her composure. Then we talked, not surprisingly, about how I lost the weight, and my book, THINKING SKINNY, which is close to completion. Photo above is of me, Chuck and Lu.

I Could Kick Myself…

14 03 2009

I could kick myself for falling prey to the ’90’s way of thinking that persons who restricted calorie consumption to lose weight were in a word, anorexic–or on the way to becoming anorexic. A recently released study by the New England Journal of Medicine challenges that notion… CLICK HERE  to read the full story.

Going Commando

26 02 2009
“Going commando: the practice of going without underwear under one’s outer clothing.” –Wikipedia definition

While the phrase, “going commando” sweeps American culture today, its origins remain uncertain. Nevertheless, it consistently elicits a knee-jerk, “heads up” reaction whenever it is used. As you can see, it works–right now I have your full attention….CLICK HERE to read the complete story.
